On Sunday June 30th, 2019 my son, N0XUE and I represented the Park County Radio Club and our ARES Group R2D3 at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb assisting the R2D2 ARES Group … This was an endurance testing event … All Radio Operators needed to be at the entrance gate at 0100 hrs Sunday Morning and at their assigned operating positions up on the Mountain by 0200 hrs … Only one way traffic permitted going up the Mountain … Spectator traffic entering at 0230 hrs … News reported this year 35,000 Spectators with the first race starting at 0700 hrs …
At the start of the race it was obvious how important the ARES operation of logging and reporting passing vehicles became …There where several motorcycles and race vehicles involved in crashes, not arriving at the next reporting station … The event had one tragic motorcycle accident … Carlin Dunne who did his “Last Race” …
This year had 27 motorcycles and 58 cars race the 12 mile course …My son and I made our way down the Mountain at 1900 hrs …With travel to and from, this it was nearly a 24 hour event …We both enjoyed working with the R2D2 ARES Group of professional Operators … This was a real learning experience for me and gave me ideas I can share with our ARES Group …
